Medicaid and SCHIP for the uninsured

30 April, 2009 (22:26) | Uncategorized | By: editor

Healthcare Leadership Council officials proposed Medicaid and SCHIP (State Children Health Insurance Plan) funds for uninsured residents in the United States. Medicaid and SCHIP fund would allow the uninsured to buy private coverage through their employers. This was a part of a larger health care reform plan that includes restructuring insurance payment to reward positive outcomes instead of fee-per-procedure. It aims to overhaul the flawed medical liability system and defensive medicine. HLC officials comments, “It is critical that Congress and the administration invest significant funds and establish national standards to encourage the implementation of health information technology as well as provide financing mechanisms to help health care providers use the technology in their medical practices.”

Can public healthcare cope with the current crisis?

17 February, 2009 (15:46) | News | By: editor

With more and more Americans losing their jobs and the their company sponsored healthcare benefits, many, especially those with chronic conditions, are looking to the State’s healthcare plan to address their healthcare needs while they are looking for new work.

However, some have expressed fears that the State’s public healthcare plan will not be able to meet all the needs of these unemployed people, simply due to their sheer numbers – as the funds might not be sufficient to support everyone.

With this in mind, US President Barack Obama has passed a bill that allows for additional funds to be channeled into the government’s healthcare aid, allowing for more people to become covered temporarily. While nothing is definite at the moment, many are hoping that the plan will stand through it’s various birth pains and work for the benefit of everyone in the long run.

eRX Alerts – Being Disregarded by Doctors

10 January, 2009 (11:47) | Health Issues, Related | By: Administrator

erxStudies are showing that many doctors are overriding the built-in medication alerts that come with electronic Rx prescriptions, substituting their own judgement as bet. The system allows accuracy and secure tracking or Rx medication for safety reasons allowing both the dispenser(pharmacist) and dispensee(patient) to get the right amount of the proper medication. The system is aimed at eliminating the mistakes with regards to dosage types of drugs while also eliminating the paper used for the millions of prescriptions issued each and every day.
The system issues alerts that are at pace with current activities regarding a drug such as drug interactions, allergies and other areas that may increase the risks of taking medication. This automatic system lessens the chance of drugs being taken by the same patient countering each other that can be fatal of the effects are so pronounced. Doctors have also been known for their legible prescription writing skills which at times confuses dispensing pharmacies who are unable to properly read them. The system is seen as an insult by many practitioners for it can sometimes contradict their preferences for drugs, preferring one from the other. More studies are underway to determine the extent of the problem for it to be addressed properly.

HMO’s – In Deep Waters

15 December, 2008 (15:41) | Cheap Insurance Plans, Health Insurance Advice | By: editor

The decay of the Health care industry has resulted in many Americans losing their coverage and ability to obtain respectable health care benefits. With the faltering economy, news just gets harder to swallow for news that major HMO’s are faltering offers no consolation to the millions who would lose their coverage should they fail. Moves by the government to adjust or lower the level for qualification into government sponsored health care provides an easy fix but a total revamp of the system might be in order to allow HMO’s to recover their former glory.
Hailed as one of the best in the world a few years back, it has fallen deeper and deeper into disarray in recent years. Millions have received qualification for access but many still face uncertainty which can result in millions more losing their ability to get affordable and respectable health care. The new government may have to pull out all its tricks to mend the system which is badly in need of reform to prevent collapse as health care costs rise and jobs are lost everyday.

Health insurance premiums in Florida have reached higher levels! Every Floridian knows that at the conclusion of each year, there will be an automatic rise in health insurance fees. This should not be a surprising occurrence, in fact, it is a certainty and every time this topic comes up, fingers begin pointing frantically trying to determine who is to blame. Floridians blame health insurance companies, who blame hospitals and medical practitioners, who then blame politicians and politicians blame inflation rates. It makes one wonder – who will the inflation rate blame? and isn’t anybody interested in finding out the real cause of this? the health expenses of the USA has increased unbelievably three times more than the inflation rate in 2004. People especially the self employed and small business owners have become resigned to the fact that these increases are a necessary evil. Or is it?

Two Proposals: What Works?

30 September, 2008 (05:15) | Family Health Insurance, Health Insurance Advice, Health Insurance Tips | By: editor

Health insurance is a very sensitive topic for average Americans. With the rising cost of premiums, it has led to many a cause for anxiety. That’s why the proposals put forth by the two presidential candidates, are being carefully scrutinized. NEWSWEEK’s Mary Carmichael has written a comprehensive article, consulting with Katherine Swartz, a professor of health policy and economics at Harvard.

Obama’s plan: An insurance exchange that looks like the Health Connector used in Massachussets. Every plan would have a minimum set of benefits, and you would get a subsidy if your income is below the threshold.
Their prediction: The total cost will be more than the estimate. His requiring insurers to cover pre-existing conditions would probably raise premiums. Although children and more people would be covered than there is now, some adults will continue to be uninsured.

McCain’s plan: to take away the tax break workers get on health insurance at their jobs, and give people who buy their own insurance $2,500 ($5,000 for families) in tax credits.
Their prediction: Low-income people would have a hard time getting affordable insurance on their own. In the long run, employers would probably stop offering health insurance, and more people would end up uninsured than there are now.
