College life is one of the most sought after stages in our lives. This is the time wherein you’ll learn a lot about your chosen field and being independent from your parents. Being in college is a bit scary too since you’re on your own and everything depends on your decisions.

Having a good health insurance plan for students is much more important these days due to the high cost of medicines. You better ask your parents now if they have a health insurance and if you’re covered too. If the answer is yes, then you’re lucky. But if not, you better work on it as soon as possible.

Health Insurance Defined

It sounds so technical doesn’t it? Well, not really. All it really means is self-explanatory. HEALTH. INSURANCE. It is your health, insured. This is where the health insurance companies come in. They offer that kind of insurance wherein they pay for medical expenses. There are different insurance companies, whether they be government-sponsored or private.

These insurance agencies ask their clients to pay premiums which will be accumulated all throughout, to serve as their insurance money or “insurance pot.” This money, they can loan to use for their medical check-ups or expenses. With the clients paying certain dues every month, when faced with a very high medical bill, they will not be too shocked with the big expenses.

Give Companies something to Insure, Not Save!

Health insurance companies would not put their money on something that is already near the expiry date. What is there to protect when you are already in bad shape? It is important then that you know your family’s medical history so that you take the necessary precautions to avoid any illness common to your family or any other disease for that matter. Vices are definitely a no-no. Aside from being perfectly healthy, there is a higher chance of getting that insurance when you apply for it at a young age. Since you are less likely to be seriously ill when you are at your twenties, insurance companies would rather invest on you than on other people. So remember to be smart and think ahead.

According to a study, about 1 million Americans do not have insurance. A lot of people die too because of this lack of insurance. Now, Millman, Inc., a pioneer consulting firm revealed in their studies that an average American family with four members will usually spend a total of $15,600 per annum for medical expenses alone. If this is the real amount needed for a family of four to be healthy, then a big chunk of their money will be allocated the wrong way if they don’t have insurance. This amount covers not only the fee of the doctor but also that of the drugs needed for further treatment.

Having more than one health insurance is not a bad idea provided that you have the capacity to pay for them all. There will be no problem if a person can pay for his/her policies on time; and if he/she will not tamper any documents needed in processing his/her health insurance policies. A person has the freedom to choose the company, policy, and number of policies he/she can buy. There might be special offers for those who have more money but everyone is still welcome to enter the doors of the health insurance companies. Health insurance companies exist not just for revenue but for genuine customer care service as well.

Health insurance is one of the benefits being offered to companies’ employees. Most of the applicants think that the company that provides health insurance to its laborers is stable and better than other companies. It is a fact that health insurance is now an “attraction” for applicants. They see it as a good opportunity however, some still regard it as a privilege since not all are capable of being covered by health insurance because of its cost. Health insurance does not only take care of the people’s health but it also somehow enhances the images of companies. This figure only suggests that Americans are becoming more aware or conscious of their health conditions; it shows how Americans value their lives. This statistics can also help in promoting health care for it can trigger curiosity to other people thinking why such group prioritizes health care. As some say, having a healthy mind and body can enable a person to do what he/she wants.

You must keep in mind that all of this changes when you are required to pay not only for yourself but also your family member’s health needs. In most time, it is cheaper to have plans that include your dependents as five individual plans but will be more costly than one plan that covers all the five individuals. The more individuals included in the cover of a particular health insurance plan, the more expensive it will be.

It is common sense that you will be encountering more problems if you have a lot of people covered in a plan. You must be aware that the plan for smokers are much more expensive compared to the clean living ones. People with asthma and diabetes might fall under the pre-existing condition. Some of the large factors in determining the cost of premiums include gender, age and general health.

An insurance customer must keep in mind that he/she should consider which is more cost effective – the individual health Insurance plan or the family health insurance plan?

Technically, individual health insurance plan is much more cheaper compared to the family health insurance due to the number of family members covered unless the individual covered is suffering from a serious health condition. Even if you choose the individual type, you’re problem doesn’t end there. You’d still have to decided if you’ll take a basic, major or an expensive plan. Do you want to pick your own doctor where you should be brought? Do you want to choose from a list if doctors provided by the insurance company for you to be able to avail discounts? You better decide on that matter first.

Medicaid and SCHIP for the uninsured

30 April, 2009 (22:26) | Uncategorized | By: editor

Healthcare Leadership Council officials proposed Medicaid and SCHIP (State Children Health Insurance Plan) funds for uninsured residents in the United States. Medicaid and SCHIP fund would allow the uninsured to buy private coverage through their employers. This was a part of a larger health care reform plan that includes restructuring insurance payment to reward positive outcomes instead of fee-per-procedure. It aims to overhaul the flawed medical liability system and defensive medicine. HLC officials comments, “It is critical that Congress and the administration invest significant funds and establish national standards to encourage the implementation of health information technology as well as provide financing mechanisms to help health care providers use the technology in their medical practices.”
